Kits & Patterns

These patterns & kits are my original rug hooking designs. I like to give you lots of options when choosing a pattern. I take great care to ensure my hand-drawn patterns are straight on grain and edges are sealed to prevent fraying while hooking. Patterns come with ample space around pattern for ease in hooking and attaching to your frame. Kits contain medium weight wool, prepared for rug hooking. If you order a kit with wool, the wools may vary somewhat from the photos shown here, depending upon availability of the woolens. Examples shown here are of some of the patterns as I have hooked them -- but please, use your favorite colors and have fun with them - you'll be amazed at how different they can look in other color schemes.

Each pattern is available, hand-drawn on:

bullet

Primitive Linen Burlap (100% linen)

bullet

Premium Scottish Linen

bullet

Paper pattern for you to transfer to your own backing

Most kits are available with your choice of:

bullet

Wool Packs (wool pieces for you to cut to your favorite strip width)

bullet

Cut Strips (in widths #8 or #9, depending on the design or your preference)

Heart & Pennies

Beginner's Rug Hooking Kit

Lepus is the star constellation of the leaping hare. This guy is not leaping, but resting under the budding trees in his spring meadow, while blue birds soar above him. This was a fun project and sure adds a lot of country charm to a room, either over a door or a window. Hooking is mounted on simple foam core, which is light-weight and easy to hang.

Pattern also available for chair pads - 15 inches round.

Door crown measures 13 x 31 inches.

This design was featured in June 2008 issue of Create & Decorate magazine.

Princess Feather is one of my favorite old quilt patterns and it hooked up easily for this pillow top! Hook the flowers in your choice of coordinating wools and change the whole color scheme to suit your room. Use a simple corded edge rather than the fringe and you have a more traditional look. You could also use it flat on a table top as a mat. Possibilities with this design are limited only by your imagination.

Pattern size is 16 x 16 inches.

This design was featured in April 2008 issue of Create & Decorate magazine.

This new rug hooking design is perfect for beginning rug hookers or anyone who loves this simple look in a rug! Large central heart design provides ultimate versatility for a rug hooker wanting to use their own wools in colors of choice, and the pattern alone is available on primitive or premium linen.

The Beginner's Kit option contains the pattern on primitive linen, a primitive rug hook, pre-cut wool strips (similar, but not always exactly as shown), instruction booklet with step-by-step instructions and much more information to help you get started in rug hooking.

Measures 16 x 12 inches.

Star Mats

Round Barn Star or Primitive Star

Wool colors can vary slightly

This design incorporates many rug hooking elements used in antique hooked rugs: Lamb's tongues, penny circles, and hit or miss blocks all contribute to the primitive, aged quality of this original design. Each corner block holds a star. Use your own color scheme for a totally different look; this pattern shows off brighter colors and looks fabulous hooked in subdues antique colors, too.

Measures 14 x 27 inches.

This was previously offered as a beginner's hooking kit, which I've replaced with a new design. This design makes a beautiful table mat in soft, country colors for rug hookers of any skill level. The simplicity of the design is still a great option for beginners, too.

Measures 16 x 12

Mug mats or hot pads can protect your furniture from hot cups and dishes. Hooked mats can add wonderful country style while doing just that! You can also use them as decorative accents in baskets and bowls. Kit includes cut wool strips and pattern on primitive linen for a PAIR of mats (2 of same design.)

Each measure 7-8 inches

Hearts Candle Mat

Here's something else I love - old quilts and old paint! I designed this simple hooked insert to fit into the door of this little cabinet. The pattern is just 6 x 12 inches, but it sure makes a big statement. The cabinet is from Viking Woodcraft. I painted the cabinet an old blue-charcoal color, sanded the edges back, and then added the log cabin hooked piece into the door. I love it!

This little piece would also look cute sitting on your table as a candle mat or hot pad. do it up in your left over strips of wool!

What do you do with all those left-over strips at the end of a project? If you are looking for a great pattern that will help you use up left-over wool strips -- here it is! Or, if you want to color plan and use your favorite combination of country colors, this will work for that, too.

Measures 12 x 22 inches

This pattern was featured in October 2006 issue of Create & Decorate magazine.

A new design for 2008 is this great intertwined hearts candle mat. Just the right size to sit under your jar candle to protect your table. It also makes a great gift that is quick to hook up for a friend or even a wedding gift.

Finished size is 11 x 13 inches

This design was featured in February 2008 issue of Create & Decorate magazine.

Bird 'n' Clover

1898 Geometric Primitive

I love this rug old rug! When I saw this antique rug, I immediately began to wonder why its maker chose these motifs and designed it the way she did. it is unusual and so primitive -- sun, bird, wreath, mug, branches and berries -- perfect!

I couldn't wait to get it drawn and hooked, keeping all the elements as close to the original as I could. I did make it a bit smaller than the original and I hope you love it as much as I do.

Measures 19 x 42

This is such a simple old rug pattern, but it is one of my favorites! Heart in each corner, simple penny flowers, and a blue bird flying above it all (I omitted the bird, but he will be on your pattern to hook or not.) Hooks up fast and really adds instant age to any room!

Finished size is 24 x 18 inches

I love the simplicity of this rug! I was immediately attracted to the antique rug of this pattern when I saw it, and had to develop an adaptation of it. It hooks up quickly and would lend itself to many color combinations very well.  Great beginner's rug, too.

This one would be beautiful with an extra border area around the outside if you wanted to make it larger, choose that in the last options box for an extra two inches of backing around the outside.

Measures 18x24

Cutwork Hearts Love Token

Adaptation of a 1700s love token originally done as cutwork paper. 14 x 14 inches.

Antique Hearts

1897 Sheep

1897 sheep rug hooking pattern

This pattern is my adaptation of a favorite antique paper-cut Valentine from the 1700s. The hearts are joined into a circle of love, and each corner is adorned with a bird. The center holds another heart framed by a circle.

Measures 14x14 inches.

This adaptation was based on the antique hearts rug that I have used as my business logo for several years now (even before I started hooking.) Barbara Carroll asked to develop a pattern from this rug as well, and she offers a slightly different version of it. The original rug can be seen on my Home page, and the one here is that which I hooked for a commission client.

Measures 18x24 inches.

This is a pattern that I  adapted from a larger antique rug original to Pa. circa 1897, according to the date hooked into it. The sheep and other design elements, as well as using soft old-colors in the wools, makes this a primitive favorite.  This pattern is one of the first known to include a date hooked into the rug. It has a great folky border and the little blue bird in the corner. Great to mix in with old rugs and with country furnishings!

Antique Floral Mat

Beautiful large pattern! My adaptation of an antique design used so much in quilts and needle works. Perfect for a wall or in front of a door or fireplace. This pattern will work up quickly and could use so many wonderful color schemes. Primitive linen only.

25 x 36 - large

17 x 22 - small

Shield-shaped flag wall hanging will make a great patriotic statement in your room. Hooked with #9 strips, this pattern hooks up fairly quickly. I finished mine with sticking fabric, but it would also be beautiful with a whipped edge using red, cream, and navy yarns.

Measures 16 x 22 inches

This is my adaptation of an antique rug shown in my all time favorite hooked rug book, American Hooked and Sewn Rugs, Folk Art Underfoot by Joel and Kate Kopp. This version is table mat size, 13 x 17 inches. This pattern is very adaptable to your own color choices, since it is not subject-dependent on certain colors.

Patriot's Pineapple

Antique Stoneware

Original design for antique pottery lovers - redware, yellowware & stoneware. 14 x 14 inches.

This is an original design. Americana in a sampler-style hooked table mat. You also attach it to a basket lid for the perfect summer picnic basket! Measures 17 x 11 inches.

I designed this pattern for a project in Create & Decorate magazine & it was featured on the cover of the June 2004 issue! The pineapple has long been the Colonial American symbol of hospitality, and I thought it would be appropriate to design this one surrounded with elements of the Flag as its border.

Measures 14 x 20.

I love old stoneware, and collect it whenever I can. So it seemed very natural for me to want to put it into a rug! I used soft old-colors in my hand-dyed and over-dyed wools to help give this rug an aged and well-loved appearance.  Looks great hanging over a grouping of the real thing - redware, stoneware, mixing bowls - ya gotta love it!

Measures 16 x 14 inches.

Country Pomegranates

This long and narrow runner is the perfect primitive accent for floor, table, bench or wherever! I hooked it in primitive muted wools from my scrap bag. It would also be lovely in softer more pastel colors.

Measures 55 x 12 inches.

featured in June 2006 Create & Decorate magazine.

This is a pattern that I designed - it is pretty way to welcome guests to your home -- place it on a table or hang in an entry way. Hook it in colors to coordinate with your home -- or hook one for a friend; hooks up very quickly! The bottom photo is the same pattern hooked in deeper fall colors and made into a pillow (click it to see a larger photo).

Please type into the Comments box on your order screen - 'light' or 'dark' colors, if you are ordering a kit with wool.

Measures 13x13 inches

Another small, quick project that would be perfect for a beginner, but just as much fun for an experienced rug hooker. The pattern  as shown measures 15 x 15 inches - I added a border suggested by Barbara Brown of Port Primitives, and it looks great. If you want the border on yours, just select that from the last Options box to add it to your order.

Measures 15 x 15 inches (without border)

Happy Jack Chair Pad or Table Mat

Dimensional Sunflowers

My favorite time of the year -- Fall (and Halloween, of course.) So, I got a start this year on some fun Fall and Halloween patterns that I hope you will want to hook. This one was my adaptation of the old black cat post card. Love his bow tie with the polka dots. I hooked the background in several green and gold wools for that wormy look.

This piece is sized perfectly for a chair pad, but it would also be perfect on a table or even hung on your door for the season!

Measures 15 inches

Here's another fun mat for Halloween. Hooks up really fast and only needs three or four wools to look great! I used an orange plaid, gold check, and a cool stripe with fall colors, and just a tad of black inside the mouth and around the eyes.

This piece is also sized perfectly for a chair pad, but use it on a table or hung on your door for the season!

Measures 15 inches

This mat was so much fun to design and hook. Sunflowers are one of my favorites -- so big, so colorful--and they feed our eyes, then they feed the birds. God is the greatest designer of all!

I hooked the petals of the sunflowers with very long loops, and then when they were done, I clipped the loops unevenly to make the fringy petals. When I hooked the centers, I hooked the outer rows closer and the inner rows a bit longer to give some roundness to the heads to resemble the seeds.

Holiday Stockings

I adore old feather trees and penny rugs . . . so the combination here was a natural for me! Mirror-image feather trees, decorated with pennies, lamb's tongues and stars. Fans adorn the corners of this great table mat. Hook it up in primitive colors, or in bright Christmas jewel tones -- either way, it will make your table sparkle with a homespun holiday flair.

Finished size is 13 x 23 inches.

I designed these versatile holiday pieces so you can hang them on your door in stead of a wreath, on your mantel in place of a traditional stocking, or add a strap and sling one over your shoulder for a great seasonal purse! Mitten pocket pattern will be personalized with your chosen initial. Be sure to tell me what letter you want on your pattern.

Fun, quick to hook, and easy to construct . .  get started and make one of each!

Measure 9 x 12 inches; kits come drawn on primitive linen

I designed these stocking for the Holiday issue of Create & Decorate magazine (2004.) The paper pattern and instructions for both are in the magazine, or you can purchase the pattern on rug backing right here. I had so much fun designing these special holiday stockings! Who says you can't fill a stocking with goodies for Halloween? And the crow is in the Christmas spirit, carrying his feather tree home to decorate his nest. I hooked the stocking with my overdyed wools - they are lined and backed with wool also. All patterns come with instructions & kits come drawn on primitive linen.

Stocking measures 15 inches at the widest foot area and 23 inches long - great size to hold lots of goodies or decorations!

Harvest Cat Basket Cover

Photo copyright All American Crafts 2007

Jack Rabbit Table Mat

I love this rug! This antique rug sold at auction in November 2004. The auction catalog had this to say about it: "A graphic hooked rug with a colorful central panel with horse, dog, rooster, and ram surrounded by meandering lines of mostly earth tones. Saw tooth borders in salmon and black. The original, antique rug measured 26 x 42.

Choose from two sizes here: 24 x 40 or 18 x 24.

Hook this one in your own wools, colors, and textures -  make it your own.

My passion for old baskets and rug hooking have collided in this harvest design! With the full harvest moon as a backdrop, this bewitching black cat waits for the basket to be filled to the brim with the season's bounty! I attached my hooking to the inside of the basket lid, so the hooking would show when the basket was open and filled with pumpkins and bittersweet. You can attach it to the outside of your lid if you wish. I found the basket at a flea market - you can use any basket you choose, and simply adjust the outer border size to fit.

Pattern size is 12 x 18 inches.

I designed this pattern as a small table mat for a client who loved rabbits. Simple saw-tooth border can be hooked in so many color combinations. Pennies add a touch of whimsy.

Measures 14 x 8.5 inches.

Spring Hare Bench Cover

Photo copyright All American Crafts 2005

Robin & Hearts

I designed this piece to attach to the top of this low bench. It is a leaping rabbit with lamb's tongues on either end. If you don't have a bench that needs a cover, it makes an awesome table runner, too! I hooked this one in deep spring colors, but it would look great in true pastels as well.

Another option would be to add extra border on the sides if you want it wider for a table rug or another size bench. If you want extra backing added to the sides for a nominal charge, just let me know when you order.

Measures 24 x 8 inches.

I love this antique hooked rug design and I hope you will, too. I hooked it with lots of texture for instant age and charm. This has been one of my favorite old rugs for a long time -- the robin is bring Spring along amidst the hearts in the corners.

Measures 14 x 28
