Kits & Patterns

These needle punch embroidery patterns & kits are my original designs. Most are available as both a pattern on foundation fabric, or as a kit. Some just as patterns on weaver's cloth.

All my kits and patterns come to you complete with detailed instructions, photo, and the pattern hand-drawn on soft 50/50 Weaver's cloth foundation fabric. The kits include the threads in colors as close to the originals as available.

Examples shown here are the designs as I have worked them using either wool blend threads or cotton overdyed floss. Wool threads have a lot of loft and produce a great primitive look; these threads come in the kits & feed best through a three-strand needle using a single strand, or two strands of thread. If you prefer to use your favorite colors and threads, you can order just the pattern - you'll be amazed at how different they can look in other color schemes and thread types.

I saw this antique penny rug and loved the graphic appeal. I adapted the penny rug for hooking and for punch needle. Both projects appear in the Holiday issue of Create and Decorate 2009. I created a pin for my winter coat - hope you like it, too.

Measures 3 x 2.25 inches.

Here is another adaptation from an old hooked rug created from strips of old flags. This one is also offered as a hooked rug design. I worked this design using 2 strands of wool thread on weaver's cloth, and then simply mounted it and framed it.

Measures 4 x 4 inches.

Pattern on weaver's cloth only - no kit.

Inspired by the quilt pattern, Log Cabin, this little piece matches my hooked rug design of the same name.

Two-strand punch needle work.

I worked mine through a wool background fabric (pattern on interfacing.) You can order your pattern either way: on interfacing or weavers cloth.

I love old game boards! the early designs and dry paint just scream country primitives. I adapted this early Parcheesi game board pattern for needle punch -- it's one of my all-time favorite old game board designs. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Design measures 6 inches.

This humble rooster stands atop his stone pedestal among the winding summer morning glories and awakes the sleepy day. This design was inspired by an antique hooked rug – perhaps you recognize it. I punched this design on wool using overdyed cotton floss. Your kit will include the pattern on interfacing -- you choose the wool you want to use as the foundation fabric (background material.) You can get your kit with or without the threads. All kits come with instructions.

Measures 6 x 6 inches

My love of grain painting lead me to this project. I grain painted a Shaker box, and then designed this fraktur-inspired bird pattern to goon top. I worked the design with the wonderful wool threads from Moon Dance Color Co. and punched it through the wool backing. You can do the same by ordering the pattern on interfacing. If you want to use weaver's cloth, you can order it that way, too!

I love the simplicity of this design! I was immediately attracted to the antique rug of this pattern when I saw it  in one of my favorite books about antique hooked rugs, and had to develop an adaptation of it for needle punch work. It works up quickly and would lend itself to many color combinations very well. Single-strand needle punch work.

Measures 3.5 x 3.5 inches.

I have always admired antique cut-work love tokens. Just such a love token was the inspiration for this needle punch adaptation. I worked the design in wool blend threads, then mounted it and framed it with a simple wide frame. Use your choice of threads and colors. Kit comes with pattern on fabric and full instructions with a photo. Measures 9 inches.

The original hand-drawn cutwork love letter was sent from Adam Dambach to his sweetheart in 1779. Cut from paper with the circle of hearts and garlands of flowers, it was his expression of love for her. The original was richly hand-colored and much more intricate in design, but its sentiment is the same – LOVE! The original appears in the ‘Folk Art’ volume of the Time-Life American Country series of books (pg 118.)

This little piece is my adaptation of an antique hooked rug that I absolutely love. The simplicity of the design just sings to my heart. I have hooked it up as a rug and now am happy to offer you the needle punch design, too. This design was featured in the August 2005 issue of Country Marketplace magazine.

Chicken Hearts

Here is another design based on one of the old fraktur I love. Deer were a very popular motif in Early American folk art, and this one is simple, but elegant-looking. Very easy to work, with classic folk art stroke work as accents. Two colors worked together to produce a soft, aged color to the deer and background. This design would also look wonderful against a dark background. Single- and double-strand needle punch work.

Measures  5.75 x 4 inches.

Inspired by antique hooked rugs, this primitive little needle punch piece makes a wonderful doll house rug or the perfect all year pin for a jacket or purse embellishment. It works up so fast, you'll want to make several in varying colors for yourself and your friends!

Here's a fun needle punch design adapted from an antique hooked rug that I love! I don't know if the old rug had a name, but I call my needle punch version "Chicken Heart." Four large corner hearts surround the chicken (or is he a rooster?) Wavy lines frame the entire pattern. Worked using Weeks Dye Works quilting threads.

This is an adaptation of my web logo antique hooked rug. I developed an adaptation of it for needle punch embroidery as well as a pattern for rug hooking.

This design is my absolute favorite of all the antique hooked rugs I have ever seen. Minimal color, but such a perfect primitive look. Single-strand needle punch work.

Measures 2.75 x 3.75 inches.

This needle punch design is a miniature version of my 1898 Primitive pattern for rug hooking. It is an adaptation of an antique American hooked rug. This design is very simple, primitive, and works up very quickly. Double-strand needle punch work.

This is another great antique hooked rug pattern that I adapted for needle punch work. large Kitty and small kitty surrounded by a garland border of leaves and flowers. Wouldn't this make a great rug for a doll house, or a pin for your summer jacket?  I framed this one in this great tin frame with the flanged edging.

Beginning Punch Needle Kit

This sweet basket cover works up quick in beautiful blue, gold, and green threads (or your choice of colors.) The basket can be found at your local craft store. Work with 6 strands of threads of your choosing.

Need a nice-looking place to gather all your keys? My kids (and yes, me too) always lose our keys! I had some little hooks by the back door, but they looked awful. So, I designed this cool needle punch insert that fits into a wide wooden frame. Paint a frame to match your decor, add some hooks, and pop the needle punch design into the opening (this opening measures 5 x 5 inches). Voila! Now you have a great place to hang your keys!

I created this kit as a learning tool, as well as a supply starter, for anyone who wants to learn to do needle punch embroidery. Included in the kit is my Heart of America pattern, the wool blend threads required to work the design, my "Learning Russian Needle Punch Embroidery" how-to booklet, a 3-strand CTR punch needle & threader, and a 4-inch Hoop-La locking lip embroidery hoop. Patriot's Pineapple

I adapted my rug hooking pattern, Folk Flowers, to create this wonderful needle punch embroidery kit. I know all you primitive lovers will like it -- at least I hope you do! I worked mine with wool threads for a soft, aged look. The area behind the central flower design remains unpunched, for a shadowbox effect. You can leave it unpunched, as I did, or fill in the background, as you wish.  I worked this one with two strands of wool thread. Measures 5.5 x 5.5 inches

You Hold My Heart - a great piece to give as a Valentine's Day gift, or to create and display in your home all year. I designed the heart and hand with a twist, as the hand is actually holding the heart. The border uses four hearts as corner blocks, too. I used overdyed Gentle Arts sampler threads to achieve an antique look. Kit comes with the same threads, or you can use your own colors and order just the pattern.

These pendant insert patterns fit into the little brass frames to make adorable pendants or pins. You can get the kit, which includes the brass frame, pattern on weavers cloth, and the threads, or you can order just the pattern.

I put one pattern on one side of the frame and the other pattern on the other for a dual-sided pendant.

Measures 1.5 x 1 inch

Each of these needle punch necklace patterns fit into the little brass frames to make an adorable pendant or pin. This kit includes two brass, flip-top frames, all four patterns on weavers cloth, and the threads to work the designs. Complete instructions for making two, double-sided pendants is also included. If you prefer to work the designs with threads of your choice, order the set without threads.

Here's a fun guy to work for the Fall & Halloween season. Just a simple old Jack set against a charcoal background. I appliquéd this to a piece of bright orange wool, then sewed the "patch" to a checked blazer using pearle cotton and a feather stitch for a very fun look for Fall. Makes a great pin, also--just turn, trim, and glue excess fabric to the back, then glue the finished piece to a matching piece of matte board & attach a pin back. So easy! Double-strand needle punch work.

This pretty Autumn wool purse is the newest in my line of needle punch purse patterns. It features a yellowware bowl brimming with fall bounty. I punched it on a natural wool using 3 strands of Burmilana wool blend threads-- you can use whatever favorite needle punch threads and fabric you like. Simple envelope construction and just added a handle of the same wool.

Kit includes the needle punch pattern on fusible woven interfacing, the paper purse pattern, and directions for constructing the purse.

The first kit in my line of needle punch purse patterns is the Summer Flowers purse, which features a big bouquet of primitive flowers. I punched mine (shown here) on denim wool using 2 strands of Burmilana wool blend threads-- you can use whatever favorite needle punch threads and fabric you like.

So you love snow guys? This little pattern is so quick and easy to work, but just so darned cute. You can finish to wear as a pin or frame it as a fun winter-time mini work of art.

Two-strand needle punch and he measures 2 x 2 inches. This kit comes with the pattern on weavers cloth.

I love the look & feel of all things wool, so I worked this sweet little feather tree on tea stained camel wool (you need to use a longer loop and iron woven fusible interfacing to the back of the wool so your stitches stay in the wool). Even though the design is larger, it works up very quickly because the wool provides the background -- you don't work the background in needle punch stitches. Double-strand needle punch work.

Pattern on interfacing: you iron onto your choice of thin-weight wool.

Kit includes the wool threads plus pattern on your choice of backing.

Designed for needle punch on wool fabric, this quickly works up for framing. No need to punch the entire background. An old black Tom cat stands on a picket fence in the light of a full harvest moon. Great piece for Fall decorating! Choose pattern only, or kit options with all you need.
