Hand-painted Ceiling MuralThis page contains photos of the ceiling mural painted on canvas that I am painted for a shop in Amherst, OH. The shop owner and I are good friends, and when this shop initially opened in this space in 1992, we were partners there. In spring of 2005, he did an historic renovation to the building (ca. mid 1800s). She has exposed the original tin ceilings and is refinished the original pine floors, in addition to installing new doors, exposing old transom windows, installing a new awning, and many other beautiful renovations to the building and retail space. There used to be a staircase that ran from the main floor to the upper level when this shop was a quarrymen's general store/hardware store. Another business made changes to the building in the mid-1900s and removed the stairs. The area of the ceiling where the stairs were removed was plastered over, but the old tin was not replaced. The area resembles a large picture frame (about 13 x 8 feet), and we thought it was the perfect place for a painted mural. The shop's logo is fashioned after an antique wooden mermaid weathervane, which is housed in the Shelburne Museum of Folk Art in VT (see below.) We felt mirror imaged Mermaids were a perfect subject for the mural, reflecting not only the shop's logo, but the friendships that have been formed and cherished there. Surrounding the central Mermaid mural is a border 12 inches deep that contains the words . . ."Friends are true twins in soul" (you can see that if you scroll down.) |

This page has some large photo files to download . . . I hope it's worth the wait. |

This is the actual antique mermaid weathervane after which the logo was adapted. She is housed at the Shelburne Museum of Folk Art in VT. Many thanks to my rug hooker friend, Anne-Marie Littenberg, for snapping this photo for me to use as reference!!

Mural with Borders Hung Around It - FinčThe mural size is 13 x 8 feet total with the borders. It was difficult to get a good photo since the mural is so high and large -- I think you can see it fairly well in this one, although the border color is a bit washed out - it is mix of blues, green, and pearl white with a soft texture.I also painted faux bricks on the plaster-covered chimney area-- this was just the start of that project . . . |
