Issue:

 October/November 2009

Welcome . . .

to this issue of my e-newsletter! Are you planning new projects for the cooler weather? I think we all feel like hooking a little more as the weather cools down. I have been hooking more, and classes have started up again for Fall. I am feeling pretty 'wooly' these days; I have new wool in the studio and tons waiting to be overdyed.  What are you up to? Let us know in the Discussions section of my Facebook Page, Folk 'n' Fiber.

So, let's get a design on our frames and get hooking!

Halloween Giveaway

This was so much fun! I had hundreds of names in the hat. The drawing commenced as night fell on the new moon (October 18th.) The suspense was killing me - I could not wait to see who would win the hand-hooked mat. So many emailed entries had little notes included, like, "Pick me!" - "I hope I win!" - "I want this." I wish I had more to give, but alas, there was just one.

The Great Pumpkin Head, as we came to call him, was waiting anxiously to see where he would be going . . . he wanted to wander from house to house so no one had to lose, but we said 'no, you must go live with one lady, at one house.' I think he was secretly happy to know that he would not be shipped all over the countryside!

And so the moment of truth arrived, the name was chosen, and we had a winner. The Great Pumpkin Head had a new place to live with someone who really, really wanted him.

CONGRATULATIONS  to the winner (drum roll...) Susan Kimball of Portland ME

Thank you all for entering the drawing every day! The Great Pumpkin Head was very flattered that so many of you wanted him to come live with you (as was I.)

Rug Hookers Network

Rug Hooking magazine has re-vamped their web site as well as the popular Rug Hooker's Network pages. Here you can find classes, shops, suppliers, and everything rug hooking related. Keep in mind that there are others out here and that the listings at this site are paid listings. Some excellent suppliers and teachers don't pay for listings and you should also seek them out. If you know of an excellent teacher, supplier, or workshop not found in the listings, let me know and I will mention them in the coming newsletter issues.

Do You Belong?

Do you know about ATHA? It is the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists and they are a wonderful organization. If you have never visited their web site, click over and read all about the group, and then JOIN!

How Do You Find Time?

Time - can you find enough to accomplish a completed rug? So many of us run from one duty, errand, and function to the next with so little time to relax and do something fun and enjoyable. Rug hooking is my relaxation and I need it! It seemed I had so much to get done, that I didn't stop to hook until late at night. I'd think about getting started and just realize that I was too darn tired . . . maybe tomorrow. Until one day I ran across April Deconick's blog, Red Jack Rugs, and saw the Ten Minute Rug Hooker badge. Wondering what it was about, I began reading and checked out the group she had started on Rug Hooking Daily at Ning network. What a great idea and a group to keep you inspired and moving forward. If you have not heard of the Ten Minute Rug Hooker group, check it out on April's blog and then jump over to join the group at Rug Hooking Daily. Just working on your hooking project 10 minutes a day (and it doesn't even need to be 10 consecutive minutes) will keep you moving on your project and you will truly be surprised at how much gets done.

Hook-a-Month Fall 2009

It's late, but I have a great new kit for my Fall 2009 Hook-a-Month rug!  I found two really awesome antique hooked rugs that I loved, so I combined elements from each to create this new-old design. I hope you love it! I can't wait to start hooking it. If you have missed out on the past hook-a-month projects, don't wait to get signed up for this one. These project kits go fast, and I only offer a limited quantity each time. So here is the rug . . .

The border came from one rug and the central design came from the other. With the antique black background, I think it is an outstanding rug. The rug measures 20 x 29 inches - a nice size.

Here is where you can find all the information about signing up for the Fall 2009 HAM (Hook-a-Month) project.

I am offering several options for payment, and the project will be shipped over the months of November 2009 - February 2010.

Better check out the details and get in on this one!

I was so excited to see the November issue of The Wool Street Journal! Bonnie Smith, editor of the magazine, asked me to write an article about how I began hooking and all that . . . then she asked for some photos that she might use along with the article. The magazine arrived, and my rugs are featured in color on the entire inside cover of the magazine!

Thanks so much to Bonnie for a great publication created especially for primitive rug hookers!

If you don't subscribe, get over there and do it!

The latest issue of Create and Decorate is on the newsstands NOW! Great projects for the holidays and beyond.

Happy Thanksgiving - until next time . . .     Sally
